Victorian Greenhouses
When developing LightMass^ flat patterns, we felt that the structure of Victorian greenhouses could be a great inspiration. They were masterpieces of glass and iron engineering, emerging during the Industrial Revolution when advancements in cast‑iron production and sheet‑glass manufacturing made their construction possible. These buildings featured lightweight yet strong iron frames, allowing for vast expanses of clear glass panels that maximised sunlight exposure for exotic plant cultivation. Improved metalworking techniques led to the creation of intricate, large‑scale conservatories such as The Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens’ Palm House. The round‑top iron frames in The Crystal Palace were not just aesthetic but also structural: their curved design helped distribute weight more efficiently, reducing the need for excessive material while maintaining strength.
